Why effective communication is important to me

I was comtemplating whether to take this module on Professional Communication when I stumbled upon the following quote by Anne Borrow Lindbergh:

"Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee and just as hard to sleep after."

Being a coffee lover, I cannot resist the temptation of coffee whenever I step into any canteens or food centres. Upon critical evaluation of the above quote, I feel that it was necessary for me to acquire some useful skills in communication so as to better position myself in relating to others. Just like having a cup of coffee which satisfies one's craving, good communication ensures the efficient transfer of knowledge from one party to another, thus leading to an enjoyable and fulfiling communication process. This minimises misunderstandings between two parties, especially in the corporate world, where there is basically no room for errors.

Here is a model of effective communication which relates actions, commitments, acceptance, understanding and awareness to one another. I believe that this model is rather relavant to the working class. Hence, I have decided to upload this model abstracted from http://www.watsonwyatt.com/strategyatwork/images/articles/CommROIpyramid.jpg.

I could remember the numerous criminal cases where I have attended in my National Service days in the Singapore Police Force. Some crimes were due to "ineffective' communication between parties involved. I shall not elaborate on the nature of these cases due to the Official Secrets Act! From this, I believe that effective communication is vital in everyone's lives, as it will cause more good than harm!

In this course, I hope to improve my communication skills which I have been tapping upon throughout my twenty two years so far as I find that it is extrememly crucial for me to get aquainted with the various effective communication skills. This set of precious skills will definitely be useful in the course of my life, be it in the university or in the workforce upon my graduation.

The Anne Borrow Lindbergh quote reminds me of all the formulaic communication we have in our daily lives from the McDonalds "you're welcome' to a 'what was the lecture like?" Often what we say is not actually what we mean as we lazily latch onto phrases which approximate to our meaning. Did Ms Lindbergh mean this? And who was she anyway? Any relation of the unfortunate Charles Lindbergh?

Your reference to your police experiemce sounds interesting by the way.

Hi Bing, we have known each other for years and I shall not go through the formalities of an introduction!

Your post was beautifully written! Usage of words was broad and it kept me reading on. However, I am not a coffee lover as you are because coffee is "over-stimulating" for me. =)

I agree that an effective communication is stimulating. For example, during a brainstorming session with members of a group project, effective communication generates more ideas, saves time, and encourages a good team spirit. On the other hand, a lack of communication in the group makes the working relationship boring and as tiring as not drinking enough coffee.

However, I could not understand the later part of your quote "just as hard to sleep after". To me, an effective communication would make me feel satisfied and be able to sleep well. Or perhaps a good communication leaves one too excited to sleep thereafter?

Dear Jia Yi,

I agree with your comments on how effective communication is stimulating.

My point of view is that once communication is effective, it is hard for one to sleep as he or she may be deep in thoughts after the communication process.

Dear Mrs. Richardson,

I do agree that we sometimes latch onto phrases which approximate to our meaning.

Throughout this course, I realised that there are various meanings to phrases and we simply cannot afford to be complacent in our understanding of certain quotes or phrases.

Thank you for your timely reminder!
